MUD\WTR :rise Review: The Biggest Mushroom Dose, and an Honest Label About the Grain

Four mushrooms with every amount printed, exact caffeine, and a plain admission that part of the blend is mycelium grown on grain. Scored on the label, not on a taste test.

MUD\WTR’s Original :rise is number 2 in our ranking of five popular mushroom coffees, scoring 7.4 out of 10 for a B. It has the biggest mushroom dose of the five, 2240 mg[1] per serving, and an unusually honest label, including the part most brands hide: some of the mushroom is mycelium grown on grain. It’s a low-caffeine cacao drink, not coffee, and it’s pricey unless you subscribe.

What the label tells you

  • Mushrooms and doses: lion's mane 560 mg, chaga 560 mg, reishi 560 mg, cordyceps 560 mg[2], 2240 mg[1] in all. Every mushroom has its own amount, so it scores full marks on dose transparency and on dose.
  • Caffeine: 35 mg[3] per serving, printed in the nutrition facts. That exact figure earns 10 of 10 on caffeine labeling.
  • Source: fruiting body and mycelium[4], with the mycelium grown on organic oats and/or organic sorghum[5]. Few brands say this so plainly.
  • Everything else: organic cacao, organic spice blend (cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, nutmeg, cloves), organic black tea, Himalayan pink salt[6]. These are flavor ingredients that make the drink what it is, so it scores 8 of 10 on fillers and extras.
  • Format: instant coffee alternative[7], 1 tbsp (6 g)[8] per serving, 30 servings[9] per tin, and 20 kcal[10] a serving.

The catch: mycelium on grain

Mycelium sold with the grain it grew on carries some of that grain into the powder, so part of the 2240 mg[1] is likely grain rather than mushroom. The label doesn’t say how much. That’s why it scores 4 of 10 on mushroom source: the source is stated, but it isn’t fruiting body only.
